Moving to Dubai with a dog: the complete relocation checklist

Relocating to the UAE is exciting — until you realise your dog needs more paperwork than you do. The good news: Dubai is one of the most pet-welcoming cities in the region, and the process is entirely doable if you start early. Here's the checklist we walk every pet parent through.

Before you book the flight

Confirm three things before anything else: that your dog's breed is permitted for import, that your destination community allows your breed and size, and that your airline accepts pets on your specific route. Several breeds — including American Pit Bull Terriers and Tosa Inu — are banned from import outright, and a few Dubai communities have their own restrictions on top of federal rules.

• Check the current MOCCAE prohibited-breed list — it is updated periodically.
• Confirm your residential community's pet policy in writing.
• Ask the airline for its live-animal route, season and crate rules.

The paperwork you can't skip

Every dog entering the UAE needs a valid import permit issued by the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE), plus a complete vaccination and microchip record. Miss one document and your dog can be refused boarding at origin — not just on arrival.

The microchip must be implanted before the rabies vaccination, or the vaccination may be considered invalid. This is the detail that catches most people out, so confirm the order with your vet at the very first appointment.

Choosing the right crate

Airlines require an IATA-compliant travel crate, and they measure it. Your dog must be able to stand fully, turn around and lie down naturally. Buy the crate early and let your dog sleep in it for a few weeks before travel — a familiar crate is the difference between a calm journey and a traumatic one.

The crate isn't luggage. To your dog, it's the one familiar thing in a very strange day — so make it feel like home long before the airport.

Surviving the summer heat

From roughly May to September, airlines enforce heat embargoes on live-animal cargo, and tarmac temperatures can make travel unsafe. If you're moving in summer, you'll often need an early-morning flight, a route that avoids long layovers in hot hubs, or a temperature-controlled pet-shipping service.

• Book the earliest departure you can — tarmac heat builds through the day.
• Avoid layovers in cities under their own heat embargo.
• Freeze a water dish so it melts slowly through the flight instead of spilling.
• Never sedate without explicit vet approval — sedation at altitude can be dangerous.

Your first week in Dubai

Once you land, give your dog time to decompress before the dog parks and beach trips. Register with a local vet in the first few days, update your microchip details to your new address, and walk in the cooler early mornings and evenings until they acclimatise. Within a fortnight, most dogs settle into the rhythm of the city beautifully.
