Loose-leash walking in 14 days: a step-by-step plan

A calm, force-free two-week plan that turns a dog who drags you down the street into one who checks in with you.

A dog checks in with their owner on a loose lead.

Pulling isn't disobedience — it's just that walking next to you was never made worth your dog's while. Let's fix that in two weeks.

What you'll need

A flat collar or harness, a non-retractable lead, and a pouch of small, soft treats your dog goes wild for.

Week one: indoors and rewarding

Start where there are no distractions. Reward your dog the instant they're at your side, before they hit the end of the lead.

  • Practise in short, two-minute bursts.
  • Mark and treat the moment the lead goes slack.
  • End every session while your dog is still keen.

The lead going tight is information, not a tug-of-war. Stop, wait for slack, then reward — every single time.

Week two: taking it outside

  • Begin in your quietest outdoor space, not a busy street.
  • Change direction the moment your dog forges ahead.
  • Bring the rewards back the instant a new distraction appears.
